Rena M. Smith ORANGE- Rena M. Martinelli Smith, 80, formerly of East Main Street and most recently a resident of Charlene Manor in Greenfield, died on Wednesday morning, November 11, 2009 at Baystate Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield, following an illness. Born on May 8, 1929 in Orange, she was a daughter of Primo and Evelyn Gabrielle Martinelli and grew up in Orange, graduating from Orange High School as Class Valedictorian in 1947. Rena was married to Alvin J. Smith Jr. in July of 1952 and had enjoyed 31 years together at the time of his death in 1983. A homemaker most of her life, Rena had worked as a cafeteria worker at Dexter Park School in Orange several years, as well as working at the former Adell Corp. in Orange and the Union Twist Drill Co. in Athol. Rena loved spending time with her family and took special interest in her granddaughter's activities. She also enjoyed crafts, watching baseball and people, going to the concerts every summer at Butterfield Park in Orange by the Orange Community Band, and was a member of St. Mary's Church in Orange. Survivors include her children, Bruce Smith of Gardner, Mark Smith and his wife, Liz, of Turners Falls, Gene Smith of Brewster, and Brenda Foster of Orange; granddaughter, Lindsay Smith of Turners Falls; brothers, Richard Martinelli, Primo Martinelli, and Arthur Martinelli, all of Orange; sisters, Jean LaMonda and Arlene Martinelli, both of Orange, and Ann Boyle of Athol; and many nephews and nieces. Calling hours will be held Sunday evening, November 15th, from 6-8:00 p.m. at Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday morning, November 16th, at St. Mary's Church, 19 Congress Street, Orange, with Fr. William Lunney officiating.
