ATHOL- Dennis J. Canning Sr., 64, of South Athol Road, died Sunday afternoon, March 3, 2024 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Athol on June 12, 1959, he was the son of James and Daisy (Wild) Canning and grew up in Orange and graduated from Ralph C. Mahar Regional in 1978.
Dennis had worked at the Rodney Hunt Company, Canning Electric and Harris Manufacturing.
An avid softball player, Dennis also enjoyed all the Boston sports teams.
Survivors include his sons, Dennis J. Canning Jr. of Athol and Shawn Canning and his wife, Samantha, of Texas; grandchildren, Zachary, Trent, Trevor, Emma Katherine, Madison, Kolton, AJ, Codi and Peyton; a sister, Kim Smith and her husband, Dan, of Orange; his father, James Canning of Athol; nephew, Kyle Smith and his fiancée Gabby Richard; a grandniece, Rylee Smith.
Dennis also leaves his fiancée, Debra “Deb” Kingsbury of Athol with whom he lived with; and a loyal cousin and friend, Steve Canning, of Orange; as well as extended family and friends.
Dennis is predeceased by his mother and brothers, Gerald and James, both in 1982.
Calling hours will be held on March 17, 2024 from 2-4 p.m. at Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange.
A celebration of life will be held on March 17, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. at the Orange American Legion, 40 Daniel Shays Highway, Orange.
