Charlotte M. Carey
SHUTESBURY-Charlotte M. (Farley) Carey, 86, of Shutesbury, died Thursday, February 8, 2018 at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Healthcare Campus in Worcester. The family is very grateful for the tender and compassionate care given to Charlotte by everyone at UMass Memorial over the last week. A daughter of Maynard and Alice (Foster) Farley, Charlotte was born in Warwick, MA on May 13, 1931. Charlotte will be deeply missed by her husband of more than 66 years, Gerald R. Carey. She leaves behind six children: Kevin (Kathryn), Deborah O’Brien (Timothy) and Gerald Jr., all of Shutesbury, Michael (Ellen) of Amherst, Vickie Lauder (David), and Lynda Vassallo (Robert) also of Shutesbury. Charlotte will be missed by her 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is survived by one brother, John Farley (Wendy) of Montague. She leaves many extended family members, sister-in-laws, brother–in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by a daughter, Lila Carey Cleveland, a granddaughter Jessica Hayes, a sister Peggy Farley, and a brother Maynard Farley Jr. She will be remembered for her knitting, sewing, and crocheting. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and countless others will continue to be warmed by the hats, mittens, blankets, and more, all lovingly hand made by Charlotte. Her skills and generous heart showed through the many hours spent knitting to donate hats and mittens to the Shutesbury Elementary School, Cooley Dickenson newborns, Amherst Survival Center, and the Greenfield Recovery Center. After raising her seven children, and providing care for countless other children, Gerald and Charlotte enjoyed traveling together; this included 20 winter trips to Florida, and RV roaming around making new friends. She graduated from New Salem Academy as valedictorian. As a young woman, she won a trip to Chicago as the prize for a speed knitting competition. There are no calling hours. A private service will be held at a later date. Donations in Charlotte’s memory can be made to the Shutesbury Firefighters Association, 42 Leverett Rd, Shutesbury, MA 01072. Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange, is directing the arrangements. You may offer your sympathy online at www.wittyfuneralhome.com
