L. Doris Olson

ORANGE- L. Doris Olson, 102, formerly of Prentiss Street, died early Tuesday morning, November 7, 2017 at Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol.

Born in Greenfield on June 15, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Gustav L. and Sophia L. (Larrson) Olson and grew up in Orange, graduating from Orange High School in 1933.

Doris worked at the former Minute Tapioca Company in Orange as a bookkeeper for 24 years until the company moved to Delaware. She then went to work as a bookkeeper for the Roberts Ford dealership in Athol (which later became Country Ford) for 24 years before retiring. Doris had also worked briefly for the Sprague Garment Company in Orange.

A member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Orange for over 60 years, she sang in the choir and served on several church committees.

Doris had been secretary and treasurer of the former Ranch-Birchland Club and had also managed the club for Minute Tapioca for several years.

Very active in Orange, Doris served as treasurer for the Old Timer’s Club, was a trustee of the Wheeler Memorial Library, treasurer for the Orange Athol Literacy Program, a member and past secretary of Orange High School Alumni Association, a part time worker and volunteer for the Town of Orange Collector’s Office and Cemetery Department where she had researched all 7 cemeteries and verified burial records.

Doris was the Town of Orange recipient of the Boston Post cane for the town’s oldest resident. In 2009, Doris traveled to Boston where she received an “Unsung Heroine Award” for her years of selfless and dedicated service to the Town of Orange, her church and community as a whole.

Doris is survived by several nephews and nieces and grandnephews and grandnieces.

She was predeceased by brothers Donald G. Olson on August 20, 2008 and Henry I. Olson on July 25, 1967.

Calling hours will be held on November 19, 2017 from 2-4 p.m. at Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange.

Funeral services will be held on November 20 , 2017 at 11:00 a.m. , in Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange, with Rev. Richard Olson officiating.

Interment will follow in South Cemetery, Orange.

Doris had requested donations in her memory be given to the Friends of the Wheeler Memorial Library, 49 East Main Street, Orange, MA 01364
