ORANGE- Bruce C. “Mitch””Coach””Beef””Mr. Mahar” Mitchell, 77, of Highland Street, died unexpectedly on Friday afternoon, September 20, 2024 at Athol Hospital after being stricken ill at home.
Born in Gardner on April 27, 1947, he was the son of the late Chester and Esther (Wright) Mitchell and graduated from Athol High School in 1965 and Fitchburg State College in 1969. Bruce had attained three Masters Degrees from Fitchburg.
Bruce married Kathleen “Kathy” (Cormier) on April 11, 1970 at St. Mary’s Church in Orange and enjoyed 54 years of marriage and raising their family.
Bruce was employed by the Ralph C. Mahar Regional School for 53 years. He served as a science teacher, science coordinator, student monitor, athletic site director and had coached baseball, volleyball and was a MS football coach.
Following retirement, he worked as a funeral assistant at Witty’s Funeral Home.
Bruce was a member of St. Mary’s Church and served as an usher and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Bruce and Kathy enjoyed family vacations, including trips to York Beach, as well as holidays, trips to the casino and working on puzzles.
“In some small way, I hope I have encouraged some students to become successful adults”.
Bruce is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Mitchell; daughters, Lisa Merritt and her husband, Christopher, and Jennifer Feyrer and her husband, Todd; grandchildren, Jared Merritt and husband Anthony, Devin Merritt, Cameron Feyrer and Victoria (Tori) Feyrer; great grandson, Lucas Merritt; brothers, Gregg Mitchell and his wife Donna, and Randy Mitchell and his wife Cindy; several nephews and nieces as well as grandnephews and grandnieces; an aunt, Norma Lively; brothers in law, Barry Cormier and his wife Connie and Robert Cormier and his wife Robin; and sister in law, Sharon Whitehouse and her husband Barry.
Calling hours will be Saturday, September 28, 2024 from 9- 11 a.m. at Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, September 28th at 11:15 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 19 Congress Street, Orange, with Fr. Mark Glover officiating.
Interment will follow in South Cemetery, Orange.
