ORANGE- Donald J. Hurtle, 83, died on Friday afternoon, July 28, 2023 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield following a brief illness, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on June 14, 1940 in Orange, he was the son of Lorenzo and Lottie (Sawin) Hurtle.
On March 1, 1965, Don enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Vietnam era and was honorably discharged on February 28, 1967.
On June 10, 1967, he married Bonnie K. (Olson) and they enjoyed 53 years of marriage until her death on January 4, 2021.
Don had worked for Erving Motors until they closed and then went to work for N&B Express until his retirement.
An avid outdoorsman, Don loved hunting and fishing. He, along with his wife Bonnie, enjoyed traveling as well.
Don was a long time active member of the Orange American Legion and took part in parades, functions at the Legion and the overall running of the Legion. He also was a member and served as Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his children and grandchildren, daughter Michele L. (Hurtle) Burke, her husband James and their children Bailey and Keenan of Amherst, NH; son Joseph A. Hurtle, his wife Rebecca and daughters RaeLeigh and Emme Castellow of Hampstead, NC; son Kevin Hurtle, his wife Annette and son Evan Lu of Yorba Linda, CA and daughter, Kim (Hurtle) Jarvenpaa and her husband Scott of New Salem; brothers, Howard Hurtle of Orange and Roger Hurtle of Louisiana; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Don was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Stone on September 2, 2019, and by a brother, Richard C. Hurtle, on October 18, 2021.
Calling hours will held on August 10, 2023 from 5-7 p.m. at Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange, for both Don and Bonnie.
Funeral services for both Don and Bonnie will be held on August 11, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Witty’s Funeral Home in Orange.
Interment will follow in South Cemetery, Orange.
