Earl W. Cullen

LEOMISTER-  Earl Warren Cullen lived a rich and full life of 78 years before peacefully passing away, with his family by his side, on January 23, 2020.  He was a good man, remembered fondly by many.

Born to Walter and Elizabeth (Sweeney) Cullen on May 9, 1941 he lived his entire life in Orange, MA.  He graduated from Mahar Regional High School in 1960.  On April 22, 1972 he married the love of his life, Caroline Desrosiers, enjoying 48 years of adventure filled marriage with her.

Earl loved his family very much, being survived by his wife Caroline, daughter Kirsten Hudson and her husband Michael of Litchfield NH, his son Kris Cullen and his wife Kelli of Leominster MA, his beloved granddaughters Sophia and Ella Hudson and his sister-in-law Barbara Cullen.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.  Earl was predeceased by his parents and four brothers, Walter (Dorothy), George (Marion), Harold (Marion), Neil (Judith), and a sister, Althea Royal (Kenneth).

Having a lifelong passion for cars and racing, he was a member of the Shifters Car Club, as well as the treasurer and classification specialist for New England Timing Association (NETA ran drag races at the Orange Airport in the 60’s).  He was a charter member of the Pioneer Valley Corvette Club and enjoyed many rallies with his 1966 Corvette.  A highlight for Earl was when he got to sit stage-side at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Las Vegas.

Calling upon his passion for cars, Earl opened his business - Cullen’s Sunoco (Repair and Towing Service) - in 1972.  Later, he worked for Simplex Time Recorder until his retirement.

As he was very committed to community service, he was a life member of the former Athol-Orange Lodge of Elks, serving as Exalted Ruler in 2000-2001, and was a life member of the Gardner Lodge of Elks.  He was also a member of the French Club of Athol and a lifetime member of the Wheelerville Community Club.  He also served as an assistant scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America.

Earl loved to travel and enjoyed cruising to many destinations, most recently, he visited 6 countries in Europe.  The highlight of the trip for him was to visit the former home of his grandfather in Dublin, Ireland.  Locally he enjoyed visiting York, Maine every spring and fall.  Earl enjoyed many hobbies, such as collecting cameras, gardening and spending hours riding his lawnmower around the yard.  Earl loved animals, especially his cat Fritz and grandpuppies Coco and Molly.  He was an avid Patriots fan.
