ORANGE - Ethel May (Engelhard) McCarthy of Marjorie Street, died in her sleep Monday, June 30, 2025, at Quabbin Valley Healthcare, Athol, MA.

Ethel was born in Turners Falls, MA, October 19, 1933, to John and Elizabeth (Frisette) Engelhard, and she graduated from Turners Falls High School in 1952.

Ethel married Francis Joseph McCarthy “Joe” on April 19, 1969, and they enjoyed 24 years together until his death on June 27, 1993.

Ethel held several different jobs after high school.  She sold magazines door to door. She was employed by the Erving Paper Mill for 12 years prior to the birth of her son, John.

After her marriage to Joe, they moved from Turners Falls to Summer Street in Orange. When John was 3 years old, Joe and Ethel purchased the house at 31 Marjorie Street and lived there for the rest of their lives.

The family joined St. Mary’s Church in the 1970’s and has continued to be parishioners there for more than 50 years.

Ethel is survived by her only child, her beloved son, John L. McCarthy. John will continue to live in the house he has known as his home since he was a young child. One sister, Alice Welcome still resides in New York State.

Besides her husband, Ethel was predeceased by her parents, her sister Margaret Spencer and her sister Elaine Zimmerman.

John wishes to express his deepest appreciation to all the RNs, LPNs, CNA’s and everyone else who helped make his mother comfortable at the Quabbin Valley Healthcare Nursing Home during her ten months residence there, as well as the caregivers from Compassus Hospice.

A Calling Hour will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2025 from 10-10:45 a.m., at Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at 11 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 19 Congress Street, Orange.

Ethel will be buried beside her husband Joe in South Cemetery following the Mass.

Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange, is assisting the family.
