ATHOL- Francis W. “Frank” Foster, 90, of Marshall Street, died Sunday evening, August 6, 2023 at Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol.
Born in Athol on December 23, 1932, he was the son of Earle and Margaret (Loggie) and grew up in Athol, graduating from Athol High School in 1950. Frank later graduated from the Lowell Institute at MIT in 1953, followed by the General Electric Apprentice course in 1954 and the General Electric Manufacturing course in 1959.
In 1955, Frank enlisted in the United States Army and served until his honorable discharge in 1957.
On August 20, 1960, Frank married Catherine Nicolson and they have enjoyed 63 years together.
Frank was employed by the L. S. Starrett Company for 32 years as Director of Research & Development before retiring. He had previously worked for General Electric for 14 years.
A member of Masons for 69 years, he had served as a past Worthy Master.
He was a member of the Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church for over 50 years and served on many committees and helped out at suppers and fairs/auctions.
A member of the Mayflower descendants, Frank was active in the community having served 8 years on the Athol Finance Committee, 35 years as a trustee of the Athol Public Library and 32 years as a Director at the Athol Credit Union.
He loved reading and the library, enjoyed golfing, fishing at Clubhouse Pond, woodworking and walking. He also enjoyed the Red Sox and Patriots, painting and the TV show, “Hogan’s Hereos”.
Frank is survived by his wife, Catherine Foster of Athol; a daughter, Diane Ruth Foster of Athol; a son, David Alan Foster, of Manchester, CT; a sister, Ruth O’Loughlin of New Salem; a brother, Richard Foster, of New Jersey; and several nephews and nieces.
Per Frank’s request, services and interment in Silver Lake Cemetery, Athol, will be private.
