Lanny R. Mitchell

ATHOL- We are profoundly sad to announce the passing of Lanny R. Mitchell, 70, of Gibson Drive, who died on Monday, September 9, 2024 at Heywood Hospital in Gardner. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Born in Pittsfield on August 23, 1954, he was the son of the late Milton H. Mitchell Sr. and Virginia (Smart) Mitchell and grew up in the Athol-Orange area.

Lanny worked for Standard Chair in Gardner and had previously worked for several Athol businesses.

An avid fisherman, Lanny tied his own flies and sold some as well. He enjoyed vacationing, especially trips with his uncle Wayne to Arizona and New Hampshire.

Lanny is survived by a daughter, Dawn Marie Mitchell (Tony) of Athol; honorary grandchildren in Connecticut that called him “PaPa”; a sister, Kim Truehart (Rusty Fellows) of Orange; brothers, Dwayne Mitchell (Jenella) of Orange, Milton Mitchell Jr. (Cheryl Chiasson)  of Athol and Dondi Mitchell (Shirley) of Orange; many nephews and nieces; uncle Wayne Smart of Arizona; and his dear friend and caretaker, Debbie LaBarge of Athol.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Melissa Ann Chzanowski, and a sister, Toni Lisa (Mitchell) Martin.

There are no calling hours.

A graveside service will be held at a later date and time in Warwick Center Cemetery in the family lot.
