Orange- Larry James Hurlburt died unexpectedly at home on Sunday, February 5, 2023.
Born in Montague on March 9, 1950, he was the son of Ronald J. Hurlburt and Evelyn M. (Alden) Hurlburt and grew up in Orange. He attended Orange Schools and graduated from New Salem Academy in 1968, as an automotive technician.
Larry was employed at various auto repair businesses including the former Cormier Garage in Orange, Flint's Auto Repair, Roberts Ford, in Athol, and Sweeney Ford in Greenfield. He was formerly employed at the L.S. Starrett Company in Athol and Rodney Hunt Company in Orange. He also was a carpenter with his father, working for the Independent Contractors Company. He worked on and built many local homes.
He was a lifetime member of the Orange Gun Club and enjoyed the fellowship there, as well as at the Eagles Club in Athol and many other local establishments.
A car enthusiast, he loved Classic cars and enjoyed driving his 1987 Mustang Convertible. Larry also enjoyed hunting in his younger years.
He was a huge fan of John Wayne and had quite a collection of various memorabilia. He spent hours watching John Wayne movies.
Larry loved his family.
He will be sadly missed by his devoted wife, Sheila, of Orange; his sons, Stephen of South Carolina and Devin of Lowell; his sisters, Pamela Harris, and Debra (Miles E.) Eastman of New Salem; brother, Randy (Nancy) Hurlburt of Orange; and grandsons, Gunnar and Cameron Mayo. He leaves several nieces and nephews.
Many of his buddies will miss him. He would want them to have a sample in his memory.
Larry was predeceased by his former wives, Deborah (Porter) and Donna (Gray), his parents, as well as his children Kim Hurlburt and William Hurlburt.
A celebration of life will take place February 18th at 11:00 AM at the Eagles Club, 99 Hapgood Street, Athol.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Witty’s Funeral Home to assist the family with expenses.
