ORANGE- Mark S. Hurt, 69, of Putnam St, died unexpectedly on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at home after being stricken ill.
Born in Athol on December 2, 1955, he was the son of the late William and Phyllis (Fisher) Hurt.
He is survived by his sister, Wendy LaBonte and her husband Gerald of Orange, his daughter Jennifer Hurt of Raleigh, NC, his son Jamie Hurt of Raleigh, NC, 3 grandchildren, 2 nephews, and several grand-nephews and nieces.
He grew up in Orange attending the Auto Mechanics program at New Salem Academy and graduating from Mahar Regional High School 1974. After graduation, Mark used his love of cars and auto mechanics to work for employers such as Estey’s Garage, General Automotive, and Sports Classics. He switched gears slightly working for 10 years as the Athol Facilities Supervisor for Heywood Hospital at the end of his career.
Mark was known for his love of antique cars and his mechanical and restoration abilities having restored several cars including his first car, a 1955 Chevy 210 Station Wagon, his father’s 1956 Chevy 2 Door Hard Top as well as many others. During his lifetime he was a member of the Bay State Chevy Club as well as the North Quabbin Cruisers. He and his family spent many trips riding in his classic cars traveling to car shows and cruise nights in various places including Nova Scotia, Canada. Mark loved talking about and sharing his knowledge of cars. He passed along his love of classic cars as well as classic rock to his family.
Mark and his beloved partner, Susan Smith, spent 20 wonderful years together. They shared a love for York Beach, ME and long drives in the ’56 Chevy. Mark was especially close with Sue’s family, including her daughters, Stephanie Smith and Heather Sheperd, and her grandchildren, James Dimetres and Avery Sheperd.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, July 24th from 5-7p.m., at Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange.
Burial at South Cemetery will be private.
