ATHOL- Michael E. Shane, 76, of 31 Charles Place, Athol, MA and 57 Shore Drive (Lake Wyola) Shutesbury, MA passed away February 18, 2025.
He was born August 28, 1948 in Norway, Maine, the son of Edward H. and Marilyn E. (Treworgy) Shane. Michael was predeceased by his mother, Marilyn E. Howard, a brother Andy Torres, a nephew Jose Torres, and many other beloved relatives and friends. He is survived by his long time companion Joyce M. Burdick, his sister Sandra Rodzik and many nieces and nephews, cousins and their children.
Michael attended schools in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, before graduating from Turners Falls High School in 1966. He graduated from Greenfield Community College with an A.S. Degree in 1974. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) with a B.A. Degree in 1977. He attended several technical schools while serving in the U.S. Navy.
Mike once served as a member of the Town of Shutesbury Finance Committee. He was a member of the board of trustees for Camp Anderson in Shutesbury, MA.
Mike was a member of the Lake Wyola Association. He enjoyed his volunteer work with LWA events, the Lake Wyola Road Race, Lake Wyola Beer & Wine Tasting, and the annual steak roast. Mike was a longtime member of the road commission.
Michael served in the U.S. Navy from 1967-1971 at many locations, during the Vietnam conflict. He was honorably discharged as an E-5 (P.O. 2) in 1971.
Mike was employed by G.T.D (Kennametal) in Greenfield from 1978 until his retirement in 2012. While a union member of G.T.D., he served several positions as a union officer for U.E. 274.
He will be buried at Plainview Cemetery in North Leverett.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
