ORANGE- Raymond M. Maronie, 88, of Magoon Road, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at Athol Hospital after being stricken ill earlier at home.
Born in Orange on February 1, 1937, he was the son of Henry and Mary (Carey) Maronie and grew up in Orange.
On August 24, 1954, Ray enlisted into the United States Army and was honorably discharged on January 17, 1956.
After his service in the Army, Ray worked in construction and eventually started his own crane business, R.M. Maronie Crane Service, which he owned and operated for over 40 years, helping set many roof trusses and post and beam timbers. Ray was also an accomplished welder. His work ethic earned him many friends and associates throughout New England.
Ray was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 98.
Whether puttering around in his yard or garage, Ray enjoyed life, especially time with his sweetheart Grace. He also enjoyed helping others and attending the annual Engine Show in Orange, even participating several years.
Ray leaves his children, Terry Maronie of North Carolina, Patty Ferris of Athol, Paula Starkey of Reno, Nevada, and Karen Maronie of Athol. He also leaves many grandchildren; several great grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Proulx of Webster; many nieces and nephews; and his sweetheart, Grace Williams, of Orange.
Besides his parents, Ray was predeceased by his sons Thomas Maronie and Steven Maronie, and by a sister, Linda Flanders.
There are no calling hours.
A celebration of life will be held at the Orange American Legion, 40 Daniel Shays Highway, Orange, on Friday, July 18, 2025 from 12 noon to 3 p.m.
Interment in South Cemetery, Orange, will be private.
