Roger W. Mallet Obituary

ORANGE- Life long Orange resident and dedicated community servant, Roger W. Mallet, 90, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, January 3, 2024.

Born in Athol on January 22, 1933, he was the son of William and Malvina (Hebert) Mallet and grew up in Orange and graduated from Athol High School in 1951.

On June 26, 1951, Roger enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the Korean Conflict aboard the USS LSM 547 and was honorably discharged on November 4, 1953.

In February of 1956, Roger married his sweetheart, Blanche (Riddell) and they enjoyed over 55 years of marriage and raising their children until her death on September 12, 2011.

Roger was employed by the Erving Paper Mill for 43 years in Product Development, later taking the role of Health Agent for the Town of Orange for 18 years before retiring.

Proud of being raised and living in Orange, Roger served as a Selectman for 16 years during the 1960’s- 70’s. He was fair with balancing the needs of the town and the fiscal responsibility that came with the position.

An avid baseball fan, Roger established the first Orange Little League in 1956 and held many offices over the years including, president, umpire and coach. Roger was also a season ticket holder for the Boston Red Sox for 26 years and enjoyed many games with family and friends.

A member of IAABO, Roger was a referee for over 40 years.

Roger loved his family immensely. Besides his love of baseball, he also enjoyed basketball and playing cards, especially pitch.

Roger’s family is grateful and appreciative to Care Central VNA & Hospice of Gardner for their compassionate care of Roger as his health declined.

Roger is survived by his son, David Mallet and his wife, Claudia, with whom Roger was living with the past year here in Orange, and a daughter, Kathleen Mallet of Brevard, North Carolina; a granddaughter, Casey Mesaeh of Brevard, North Carolina; and many nephews and nieces and grandnephews and grandnieces.

Besides his parents an wife, Roger was predeceased by brothers, Levi Mallet and Edgar “Bones” Mallet, along with a sister, Louisa Bettey.

Calling hours will be held on January 22, 2024 from 4-6 p.m. at Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on January 23, 2024 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 19 Congress Street, Orange. Please go directly to church.

Interment in Gethsemane Cemetery in Athol will be private.
