ORANGE- Shirley Irene (Thompson) Horton, 96, formerly of Wheeler Avenue, died on July 11, 2023 at the D’Youville Senior Center in Lowell.
Born in Athol, MA on August 7, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Henry A. and Anna I. (Reed) Thompson.
Luther married Shirley I. (Thompson) on February 12, 1949 and enjoyed 64 years together until his death on February 18, 2013.
Shirley worked as a bookkeeper for the Kimball-Cooke Insurance Company for19 years, retiring in 1988.
A Lifetime member of the Orange Historical Society where she served as a long time treasurer and helped with numerous fundraisers, Shirley was also a member of the First Universalist Church and its Unity Club, as well as a member of AARP. Shirley was a volunteer at the Wheeler Memorial Library in Orange and also served as a hospice volunteer.
Survivors include her daughters, Debbie Horton Allen and her husband, John, of Acton MA, Maryanne Horton Soderberg and her husband, Jan, of Vaxholm, Sweden, and Cynthia Horton Barr and her husband, Michael, of Estero, FL; 8 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; sister in law Linda Lou Wilson(Walt) Franklin NH and many nieces and nephews
Shirley is predeceased by her grandson Jared J Allen Dec 6 2020 and her 7 brothers and sisters
There are no calling hours.
A memorial service will be held on October 23, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange.
Interment will follow in South Cemetery, 585 South Main Street, Orange.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Orange Historical Society, P.O. Box 28, Orange, MA 01364, the First Universalist Church, 31 North Main Street, Orange, MA 01364, or to the donor’s choice.
